百花魁というのは、梅が全ての花の中でも早咲きであることから、
「百花の魁（先駆け）」となる意を含んでのこと。

だから胡蝶という能の中では、梅の花と戯れることの
出来ない蝶が仏に懇願するという話がある。

Japanese Plum is called "Hyakka-kai" which means that
it blooms upon all flowers in the early Spring.

Even butterflies are eager to play around the plum
since it is too early for them to fly around.
