November 15th is the 'seven-five-three' festival in Japan. (Ya know, Japanese is quite busy so almost every weekend is occasional dates for young couples.)
It is a day for people to celebrate their children's growth and to pray for their future health. On the festival day, seven-, five-, and three-year-old children are beautifully dressed in Japanese kimono and taken to a shrine.
At the shrine, the children participate in a traditional Shinto ritual for purification. After the ritual, the children receive a long red and white-striped candy stick, called Chitose-ame. Its length symbolizes long life and its colors represent happiness.
Many families go to photo studios to have professional pictures taken of their children for lasting memories. (Well, of course I wasn't in charge of their lasting memories, hehe)
